Russian political analyst Aleksey Naumov emphasized the significance of Armenia's pursuit of a peaceful resolution in its relations with Azerbaijan during an interview with Ednews TV. Naumov's comments come ahead of the upcoming meeting between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia scheduled to take place in Almaty on May 10.
Naumov acknowledged the complexity of the ongoing conflict, stating that while the meeting in Kazakhstan holds importance, substantial progress may not be immediate. He highlighted Kazakhstan's role as a neutral ground for diplomatic discussions, leveling the playing field between the two nations. Despite the frozen nature of the peace process, Naumov praised Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his willingness to engage in dialogue, even amidst domestic opposition.
The analyst noted Pashinyan's decision to return four exclave villages to Azerbaijan, a move met with resistance from some segments of Armenian society. Despite challenges, Naumov stressed the inevitability of a peaceful solution and Azerbaijan's legitimate demands being met. However, he cautioned against overly hasty progress, citing potential backlash against Pashinyan if perceived as moving too swiftly towards peace.
"While immediate concessions may not be forthcoming, the path to peace is inevitable," Naumov stated. "Azerbaijan's just demands will ultimately be addressed, but the internal political landscape in Armenia may prolong the process."
Naumov underscored the importance of Armenia's commitment to peaceful negotiations, cautioning that failure to do so could prompt alternative methods from Azerbaijan to compel compliance. He expressed hope that such measures would not be necessary and reiterated the imperative for Armenia to pursue dialogue in good faith.
The upcoming meeting in Almaty serves as another opportunity for diplomatic engagement, albeit with tempered expectations for significant breakthroughs. Despite challenges, Naumov remains optimistic that a peaceful settlement will eventually be reached, emphasizing the role of leaders like Pashinyan in steering Armenia towards a constructive path forward.
